I bought the Anker 621 MagGo as my first MagSafe-compatible battery pack after having mixed experiences with older Qi wireless chargers. Those older chargers were often frustrating because they had alignment issues, generated a lot of heat, and never sat properly on phones with large camera bumps. The Anker 621 solves many of those problems right away.
The strongest feature is the magnetic attachment. It snaps securely onto the back of my iPhone 14 Pro and stays in place, even with a case installed. The compact and slim design makes it easy to slip into a pocket or backpack without carrying extra cables or accessories. For everyday convenience, it’s hard to beat the simplicity of just attaching it and continuing to use your phone normally.
In terms of performance, the battery pack delivered solid results, though not quite what I expected from the advertised 5,000mAh capacity. After fully charging the unit with a USB-C charger, I used it to top up my iPhone over several days. While it worked reliably, I quickly noticed significant heat buildup during wireless charging. After roughly a 10% phone charge increase, both the battery pack and phone became noticeably warm, enough that I preferred using it in shorter sessions rather than continuously.
When charging devices via USB-C, efficiency seemed much better. Charging an iPad Mini through a cable transferred a substantial amount of power before the battery was depleted, and the overall energy efficiency appeared considerably higher than when using wireless charging.
The biggest drawback is heat. This isn’t unique to Anker—wireless charging is inherently less efficient than wired charging. A noticeable portion of the battery’s energy is lost as heat during the charging process. The battery pack itself becomes warm, and the phone warms up as well. If you’re concerned about long-term battery health, this is something worth considering since higher operating temperatures can accelerate lithium-ion battery aging over time.
Pros
- Strong and reliable MagSafe magnetic attachment
- Slim, lightweight, and highly portable
- No need to carry charging cables for quick top-ups
- Works well with phone cases
- USB-C charging is reasonably efficient
- Leaves the phone’s charging port free for accessories like wired headphones
Cons
- Generates noticeable heat during wireless charging
- Wireless charging efficiency is lower than wired charging
- Real-world usable capacity may feel lower than the advertised 5,000mAh
- Not ideal for extended wireless charging sessions
Final Verdict
The Anker 621 MagGo excels in convenience and portability. Its strong magnetic connection, compact design, and cable-free charging make it an excellent everyday carry accessory for iPhone users. While the heat generated during wireless charging and the less-than-perfect efficiency are legitimate concerns, these are limitations of wireless charging technology rather than flaws specific to Anker.
If your priority is convenience and quick on-the-go charging, the Anker 621 is a worthwhile purchase. If maximum efficiency and battery longevity are your main concerns, you’ll get better results using the USB-C cable whenever possible.
